Special School Safaga for Mentally Handicapped Children

Special School Safaga LogoAbout us…

The Special School Safaga for Mentally Handicapped Children was established in October 2010 by the Egyptian governement. The school aims to promote acceptance of people with a mental disability since until this day a mental handicap causes people and their family to be shunned by society in Egypt. There are children with Down syndrome, autism and developmental disability in an age range of 5 to 17 years.

How we started…

In 2011, Sofie Deconinck and Danielle Theunissen, heard about this new school and the need for extra help. The first visit to the school was shocking for them since the approach to education for handicapped in Western countries is quite different. Sofie and Danielle decided to take action and reach a helping hand.

How we developped…

Over the years we expanded the activities for the children with outdoor trips, animation in Nemo Dive Club & Hotel and weekly recreational sessions in the school by our volunteers encouraging the children to improve creativity and skills.
In 2014 Sofie took initiative to organize water therapy for some children of Safaga with a physical condition since also they are left unsupported. Nemo Hotel offered the use of it’s pool for this purpose and today several children attend these weekly sessions, guided by professional therapists in pysiotherapy and speach therapy. These professionals also treat them 3 times by week in their private practices.

What is our goal…

The foundation aims to raise funds to buy necessary school equipment to provide the teachers and our team of volunteers with multiple opportunities to stimulate and activate the children, aswell as financing the therapies.
